DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Uses

For occasional use as an aid to soften, loosen and remove excessive earwax.

Directions

FOR USE IN THE EAR ONLY. Adults and children over 12 years of age.

Tilt head sideways and place 5 to 10 drops into ear. Tip of applicator should NOT enter ear canal. With head still tilted sideways, insert earplugs as follows: Reach over head and pull up and back on outer ear to straighten ear canal. With opposite hand, grasp earplug stem and insert by pressing forward in a circular motion, enough to seal in drops. Repeat for other ear, if treating both ears. Keep drops in ear(s) for several minutes. Remove earplugs slowly with a twisting motion to gradually break the seal. Use twice daily for up to four days if needed, or as directed by a doctor. Any earwax remaining after the 4-day treatment may be removed by gently rinsing the ear with body-temperature water, using the Bellow Syringe. Fill supplied tub 1/3 to 1/2 full with body-temperature water. Fully compress Bellow Syringe and insert blue Rinse Tip into water. Release the pressure on the Bellow Syringe, allowing the water to be drawn into the bellow. While holding empty tub beneath ear, place the blue Rinse Tip into ear opening and compress bellow to rinse ear canal.

Children under 12 years of age: consult a doctor.

Avoid exposing Earwax Removal Drops to excessive heat and sunlight. Ear drops foam on contact with earwax due to release of oxygen. There may be an associated “crackling” sound. FAQ

What can I do to help dry the water from my ear canals after I have flushed them using an ear syringe?

After flushing the earwax from your ear canals, you can help dry the water that sometimes remains in the ear by using Mack’s® Dry-n-Clear® Ear Drying Aid. Mack’s® Dry-n-Clear® ear drops help relieve the discomfort of water-clogged ears from swimming, bathing, showering, and water sports by drying excess water.

I’ve heard of 3 other methods and tools for removing earwax such ear candling, cotton-tipped swabs, and oral irrigators. Are any of them safe and effective?

None of them are considered safe and effective by the medical field. The formula contained in Mack’s® Wax Away® is the only formula considered by the FDA as safe and effective for earwax removal.

  1.  An ear candle is a hollow cone made of paraffin and beeswax with cloth on the tapered end. The tapered end is placed inside the ear, and an assistant lights the other end, while making sure your hair does not catch on fire. In theory, as the flame burns, a vacuum is created, which draws the wax out of the ear. Clinical trials, however, showed that no vacuum was created, and no wax was removed. Furthermore, physicians find that the burning wax can enter the ear and cause ear burns and a hole in your eardrum.
  2.  Using cotton-tipped swabs is ineffective and can be dangerous. Using cotton-tipped swabs to remove earwax can cause small scratches or tears in the ear canal, increasing the risk of infection. Furthermore, placing objects in the ear often makes matters worse by pushing wax further back into the canal creating a hard clot of impacted earwax. Impacted earwax can cause you to experience impaired hearing, a feeling of fullness in the ear, itching in the ear, or ringing in the ear. By using these swabs, you also run the risk of puncturing your eardrum.
  3.  You should never use oral irrigators to remove earwax from your ear canal as they can cause a puncture to your eardrum.

What are the first aid measures if these ear drops are improperly used or accidentally misused?

In either case, the following procedures should be taken:

Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water. Get medical attention if irritation persists.

Skin Irritation: Immediately and thoroughly wash off with soap and water.

Ingestion: If swallowed, seek medical attention.

Inhalation: N/A

Do I use the ear syringe to flush out the ear canal after each application of earwax removal drops?

No. A full “Treatment” is defined as using the earwax removal ear drops two times daily for up to 4 days. After the fourth day, if necessary, the individual may flush out the ear canal with the ear syringe.

***If an individual uses the ear drops and notices the symptoms of itching or clogging have disappeared before the treatment has been completed, it may not be necessary for him or her to complete the full 4-day treatment. Flushing the ear canal with the ear syringe during the 4-day treatment, may be done at the user’s discretion.

I used the product as directed but my ears still feel clogged. What should I do?

Impacted earwax will absorb the ear drops and may increase the clogged-ear sensation during treatment. Some stubborn earwax impactions may require a more aggressive removal method administered by a medical professional. If you have completed the full 4-day treatment, flushed the ear canal with the ear syringe and still have not experienced relief, please consult an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) physician or audiologist.
